Concept Designer at Pompei A.D.
Our firm was invited to participate in a quick design pitch for the Times Square Sunglass Hut location. The result of the exercise was a refracted experience that was meant to be unique to each end user.
Our inspiration for this project came from light. In particular we were interested in playing with the visible spectrum of light and the ability of a crystal to split light and create that spectrum. We have used the physical characteristics of crystals to influence the design of the store both for the facade and the interior.
Situated at the corner of 45th street and 7th Avenue, a sculptural faceted crystalline form creates an iconic and eye catching respite from the visually saturated surroundings. Offering an elegant counterpoint to the garish loud surroundings of Times Square. Constructed of light transmitting materials such
as frosted glass, the crystal is imbedded with color changing LED lighting allowing for a constantly changing color palette to play across the facade.
The facade of the store also functions as a canvas that can be used by artists to create unique light installations. Each week can feature a different artist
creating continuous buzz around the Sunglass Hut store, giving residents and tourists a reason to make repeated visits to the site. The use of this sculptural
light installation creates an opportunity to elevate the brand by introducing light and color to the brand story.
The crystal motif is continued across the interior of the store providing a striking interplay of faceted shapes that surround the current 6000 fixturing systems.
These facets double as a backdrop for 3D video projection technology offering customized brand messaging elements in the elevated spaces. Additionally the edges of these facets are accented with slim color changing led strips that enhance the interior space and reinforce the notion of the light within.
Central to the space is an interactive social bar where consumers engage, test, and share their experiences in the latest products and trends via the Social Sun platform. Consumer Photos then have the ability to be projected instantly around the store as well as online.
Complete control over the lighting environment of the space is possible with an ambient crystalline ceiling element occupying the space above the retail floor. Subtly changing to reflect differing lighting conditions offering a powerful consumer experience.
Brand and campaign messaging are also obtained through the use of suspended LED tickers that navigate their display throughout the entire retail space.
